Wilmington, NC - Christian Vega of Newton Grove, North Carolina has officially committed to the University of Mount Olive for the upcoming 2019 season to continue his playing career after two successful seasons with the Sea Devils.
As a freshman Christian Vega started in 8 of the 17 games he played in during the 2017 season, scoring one goal and earning one assist. In his sophomore year (2018) Vega started in 15 of his 16 games played, playing a larger role and racking up three assists. Playing in every game during his time at Cape Fear, Vega was elected captain his sophomore year leading the team on and off the field.
We asked the University of Mount Olive Head Coach Sean Brennan what his feelings on Vega were. Coach Brennan said "We are very excited with the addition of Christian. We think Christian is a versatile player that can play multiple roles in our system and he brings experience as well as maturity having played two years at the Junior College level already. He is a great addition and we look forward to working with him in August."
Head Coach C.W. Ponton also speaks highly of Vega, "Vega has shown everyone from his first day here the importance of leading off the field, not just on. He sees the big picture for sure." Vega played mostly on the outside midfield his freshman year but worked his way into a starting spot his sophomore year primarily at right back. Ponton further comments that "from day one we have been working to get Vega at Mount Olive as that has been his top choice all along, so to see him make their squad is very satisfying. Vega is what we look for in players at our program. Players who fight their way into the starting lineup and then hold onto a starting position through the rest of their time here while getting good grades. His patience and willingness to play positions he had never played before shows his commitment to the team over himself. It's that type of dedication on the field and in the classroom and selflessness that we would like all our players to have."
