Men's Basketball Falls Short at BCC Holiday Tournament
Cape Fear competed at the Brunswick Holiday Classic, facing quality opponents in Chattanooga State and Harcum while gaining valuable experience that will pay dividends as the season progresses.
The Sea Devils opened tournament play on Friday, December 12, against Chattanooga State in a physical, back-and-forth matchup. Cape Fear played with confidence in the opening half, trading baskets throughout and heading into the locker room trailing by just one, 43–42. MJ Rice set the tone early by attacking the rim, while the Sea Devils stayed connected defensively and limited extended runs.
Cape Fear carried that momentum into the second half and remained within striking distance midway through the period, cutting the deficit to 61–59. Chattanooga State answered with a pivotal 10–0 run that shifted control of the game. Despite Cape Fear's continued effort, Chattanooga State's efficient shooting allowed them to pull away late and secure a 90–75 victory.
On Sunday, Cape Fear responded with one of its most complete efforts of the weekend in a dramatic 86–84 loss to Harcum College. The Sea Devils came out with energy and purpose, building a 46–44 halftime lead behind strong ball movement and balanced scoring. In the second half, Cape Fear pushed its advantage into double figures, appearing poised to close out the game.
Harcum slowly worked its way back, tightening the contest in the final minutes. After Harcum took a one-point lead with under 30 seconds remaining, Jadyn Cooper delivered a clutch basket with eight seconds left to tie the game at 84. Harcum was able to advance the ball quickly on the final possession and convert an offensive rebound put-back at the buzzer to seal the win.
MJ Rice led Cape Fear offensively over the weekend, scoring 21 points against Chattanooga State and 24 against Harcum. JJ Moore also had a strong tournament, contributing 13 points on Friday and posting a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists on Sunday. Jadyn Cooper provided a spark off the bench against Harcum with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Malachi Simpson reached double figures in both games.
Coach Mark Lane was pleased with his team's response and competitiveness throughout the tournament. He noted the group showed growth from game to game, but emphasized the importance of capitalizing on momentum swings, executing late, and learning how to close games against high-level opponents.
Cape Fear leaves the Brunswick Holiday Classic battle-tested and encouraged by its effort, carrying valuable lessons forward as the season continues. The Sea Devils take the Holiday break off and return to action January 3, 2026, as they welcome Thomas Ridge Prep to the Schwartz Center. Game time is set for 3:00PM.
