Caldwell Outlasts Cape Fear
The Cape Fear Community College Sea Devils put together a strong offensive effort Saturday afternoon but fell on the road to Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute, 112–95.
Both teams came out firing, trading baskets through the first ten minutes of the opening half as Cape Fear matched Caldwell's tempo. Caldwell was able to create separation late in the half behind efficient shooting, but the Sea Devils stayed aggressive and went into the break down nine after scoring 48 first-half points.
Caldwell extended its lead early in the second half, pushing the margin to as many as 17, but Cape Fear responded with one of its best stretches of the season. Fueled by energy off the bench and consistent scoring, the Sea Devils chipped away at the deficit and briefly took a one-point lead with just under seven minutes remaining, shifting momentum in their favor.
That momentum was short-lived, as Caldwell answered out of a timeout by knocking down three consecutive three-pointers. The surge proved decisive, as Caldwell regained control and closed the game with timely shooting.
MJ Rice led the Sea Devils with a double-double performance off the bench, finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds while consistently attacking the rim and getting to the free-throw line. JJ Moore added 18 points and helped facilitate the offense, while Jon White contributed 16 points and knocked down four three-pointers. Cape Fear shot efficiently, connecting on over 44 percent from the field and nearly 39 percent from beyond the arc.
"We showed a lot of toughness battling back after being down 17," Lane said. "But against good teams, you can't relax, or they'll make you pay. When we've put two complete halves together this season, we've won games, and that has to be our focus moving forward."
The loss moves the Sea Devils to 7–5 overall and 1–2 in Region 10 play. Cape Fear returns to action Wednesday at Denmark, with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
