Sea Devils Fall in Heartbreaker, 103-99
Cape Fear Community College delivered one of its grittiest performances of the season Monday afternoon, but the Sea Devils came up just short in a thrilling 103-99 overtime loss to Caldwell Tech.
The game opened with nonstop energy, as both teams traded baskets throughout a back-and-forth first half. Cape Fear knocked down timely three-pointers and matched Caldwell's pace to take a lead into halftime.
Cape Fear continued its strong play coming out of the break, using a key 12-2 run in the second half to build a nine-point advantage. But as the clock dipped under three minutes remaining, Caldwell Tech began chipping away and eventually forced overtime with tough shot-making down the stretch.
Despite battling foul trouble for much of the game and being shorthanded, Cape Fear refused to fold. Even in overtime, the Sea Devils faced another uphill climb, trailing by seven with just over a minute remaining. Cape Fear stormed back once again, cutting the deficit to one and creating a chance to tie, but the comeback effort ultimately came up short.
Greysen McCadden sparked the Sea Devils off the bench with a team-high 22 points, while Jacob Daniels added 21 points in another strong reserve performance. JJ Moore filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 13 assists, eight rebounds, and four steals.
"We were undermanned and still battled all the way to the end," said Head Coach Mark Lane. "Our bench was dynamite the entire game. I really felt like we should've won it, but I'm proud of our guys for never giving up."
Cape Fear is back in action Wednesday night, as they welcome USC Salkehatchie to the Schwartz Center. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
