Sea Devils Battle to 0-0 Draw at College of Southern Maryland
LA PLATA, Md. – Cape Fear Community College men's soccer wrapped up its opening weekend with another shutout, playing to a 0-0 draw against the College of Southern Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
The Sea Devils (1-0-1) put together another impressive defensive performance, posting back-to-back clean sheets to begin the 2025 campaign. Freshman goalkeeper Jayden Drum stopped both shots on target he faced, while fellow newcomers Roman Bongiovanni and Veikko Kemppainen once again anchored the back line with 90-minute shifts.
Cape Fear controlled much of the match, generating an 18-10 shot advantage and holding nearly 70 percent possession. Jonathan Leon led the attack with four shots, including three on goal, while Andrew Allain added four more attempts. The Sea Devils also earned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks but were unable to break through against CSM goalkeeper Matthew Knapp, who finished with six saves.
Southern Maryland's best look came in the first 15 minutes, but after that early push, the Sea Devils clamped down defensively. CSM was limited to just two shots on frame and failed to register a single attempt in the closing 45 minutes.
"Our defense looks solid, and I'm really proud of the grit and fight the boys showed all weekend," the coaching staff said. "We just need to sharpen up in the final third as we move closer to the start of Region 10 play. To see our vision come to life this early with such a young group is really encouraging."
Cape Fear returns to action this week in non-conference play before opening Region 10 competition.
