A competitive back-and-forth game between two evenly matched programs ended in a 3–2 loss for Cape Fear Community College on Friday afternoon against Wake Technical Community College.
The match featured plenty of physical play, with the referee calling 25 fouls that continually disrupted the flow of the game. Despite the frequent stoppages, both teams created quality chances and battled throughout.
Cape Fear struck first in the 14th minute when John Roberts netted his first goal of the season, calmly finishing inside the six after an unselfish assist from freshman Eno Baker. The Sea Devils doubled their lead in the 23rd minute as sophomore Julius McLemore scored his first goal of the year, assisted by Andrew Allain. McLemore's effort stood out, as he refused to give up on a ball the Wake Tech keeper appeared to control, toe-poking it into the back of the net to make it 2–0.
Wake Tech responded with two goals late in the first half to tie the match, then took the lead early in the second. Despite strong defensive efforts and multiple saves, Cape Fear couldn't find an equalizer and fell 3–2 at home.
The loss drops Cape Fear to 2-3-3 overall. The Sea Devils will return to Region 10 play on Monday at Patrick & Henry Community College.
Coach's View
"This was a hard one to take. Being up 2–0 at home, you would think we could secure this victory, but this just shows how strong and deep Region 10 competition is." — Coach Giovanni Vlahos
