Cape Fear Community College men's soccer closed its regular season on a tough note Sunday, falling 3–0 at Richard Bland College in conditions that made consistent play a challenge.
Massive winds swept across the pitch from the opening whistle, dictating much of the action and frustrating both sides. Unfortunately for the Sea Devils, the early gusts also carried costly mistakes. A misplayed back pass under pressure set up Richard Bland's opening goal, and the Statesmen quickly built on that momentum with two more first-half tallies.
From there, Cape Fear struggled to find rhythm or maintain possession against both the wind and a confident Richard Bland side. Despite the scoreline, sophomore goalkeeper Aydan Scharf turned in a strong performance, recording six saves and standing firm through repeated one-on-one chances. Freshman Aleksei Myers closed the match with two more stops in relief.
"This is hard to close out the year this way," said head coach Giovanni Vlahos. "We held our own destiny to make the Region 10 tournament. Now we'll have to wait and see how P&H and Louisburg do to see if we qualify."
The Sea Devils finish the regular season 2-5-4, and will await results elsewhere to determine if their postseason run will continue.
