Bio
This upcoming season will be Stephen Esenwein's fourth as a Sea Devil.
Coach Esenwein joined the Sea Devils for the Fall 2023 season as an Assistant Men's Soccer Coach, specializing in goalkeeper development and training. Since arriving at Cape Fear Community College, he has played an integral role in goalkeeper development, recruiting, player mentorship, and the continued growth of the men's soccer program, helping student-athletes maximize their potential both on and off the field.
Esenwein earned his Associate in Arts degree from Cape Fear Community College before obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Sports, Recreation, and Tourism Management with a concentration in Sport Management from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He later completed a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Johnson University. A former student-athlete at both Cape Fear Community College and Johnson University, Esenwein brings firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the collegiate soccer landscape.
In addition to his collegiate experience, Esenwein has competed and coached at various levels of the game. His playing background includes experience in both the UPSL and NPSL with Brunswick FC, Levi United, ILM FC, One Knox, and 865 Alliance. He also holds multiple coaching licenses through the U.S. Soccer Federation and possesses a strong foundation in player development, coaching education, and youth soccer administration.
Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Esenwein played at East Gaston High School and for the SGCSA Flames Soccer Club. Following his graduation from UNC Wilmington, he returned to SGCSA Flames as a coach, working with the U14, U16, and U18 age groups while helping develop players both on and off the field. His leadership experience extends beyond coaching, having served as Event Manager for Belmont Recreation Youth Soccer and as Director of Game Management at Cape Fear Community College, where he coordinated events and programs that supported the growth of soccer and student-athlete engagement within the community.
Esenwein's passion for player development, leadership, and education continues to make him a valuable member of the Sea Devils coaching staff as the program strives for continued success.
