Sea Devils Handle Southwest Virginia on the Road, 58–44
Cape Fear Community College women's basketball continued its strong start to the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Southwest Virginia 58–44 behind another balanced effort.
The Sea Devils controlled the tempo from the opening tip, building an early lead and maintaining it with steady defense and rebounding. Facing a 3–2 zone and a triangle-and-two for the first time this year, Cape Fear adjusted quickly, using patience and ball movement to find open looks.
Kelize Velez Galan led the offense with 17 points, hitting four three-pointers and grabbing six rebounds. Monica Surratt dominated in the paint with 17 points and 14 boards, while Yamorie Hardison added a double-double of her own with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Maggie Hawley provided spacing from the perimeter, scoring nine points — all from beyond the arc — and Jaeden Hudson helped orchestrate the offense with six assists off the bench.
The Sea Devils held Southwest Virginia to just 22 percent shooting from the field and 14 percent from three-point range while outrebounding the hosts 42–30.
Head Coach Felicity Havens said she was pleased with how her team handled the defensive looks and continued to grow together. "With each game, we're building more chemistry," Havens said. "We just have to keep improving the small details and holding each other accountable to leave it all out there every night."
Cape Fear improves to 3–0 on the season and will hit the road again next week as they travel to Wake Tech on Wednesday evening. Game time against the Eagles is set for 6:00 PM in Raleigh.
