Cape Fear Knocks Off Cleveland 63-53
Cape Fear Community College put together a disciplined, team-oriented performance Friday afternoon, pulling away from Cleveland Community College for a 63–53 victory on January 23 in Wilmington.
The game opened evenly, with both teams trading baskets and settling into the flow early. The first quarter ended tied at 10–10, and Cleveland continued to compete in the second, keeping the score tight heading into halftime. Cape Fear carried a narrow 19–18 lead at the break, relying on defensive effort and rebounding to stay in control despite a low-scoring first half.
The Sea Devils began to create separation in the third quarter. Defensive pressure increased, possessions became more connected, and Cape Fear found a better offensive rhythm, outscoring Cleveland to take a 37–31 lead into the final period. The momentum carried into the fourth, where the Sea Devils played with confidence and composure, extending the lead through timely shooting and consistent execution on both ends.
Offensively, Kelize Velez-Galan led the way with 22 points, knocking down five three-pointers while adding 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Monica Surratt controlled the paint with 14 points and 17 rebounds, providing a strong interior presence throughout the game. Cara Trippett chipped in 13 points, while Maggie Hawley contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists, helping keep the offense organized.
Cape Fear finished the afternoon with 48 rebounds, consistently winning the battle on the glass and limiting Cleveland's second-chance opportunities. The balanced effort and defensive consistency proved to be the difference as the Sea Devils pulled away late.
"We stayed patient and connected, even when shots weren't falling early," Havens said. "Our defense and rebounding kept us steady, and once we found our rhythm, you could see the confidence grow. I'm really proud of how this group played together."
The Lady Sea Devils are back in action Saturday as they travel to Lousiburg, NC for a tilt with the Hurricanes of Louisburg College. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
