Women's Basketball Falls To Louisburg
Playing with just five available players, Cape Fear Community College went toe-to-toe with Louisburg College before falling 83-75 on February 16 in Louisburg, N.C.
Cape Fear set the tone early, jumping out to a 22-18 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 45-38 at halftime. The Sea Devils continued to control the game through three quarters, carrying a 61-59 advantage into the fourth. For most of the night, they handled the physical play and dictated the pace.
The final period proved decisive. Louisburg shot 53 percent from the field and outscored Cape Fear 24-14 in the fourth quarter, hitting timely shots down the stretch. After leading throughout, the Sea Devils trailed for the first time late in the game and couldn't regain momentum.
Kelize Velez-Galan led the way with 35 points, knocking down four three-pointers and going a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line. Yamorie Hardison added 18 points and 14 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, while Cara Trippett finished with 14 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Jaeden Hudson chipped in six points and six rebounds as Cape Fear shot 45.6 percent from the field.
"I'm really proud of the way we competed," Havens said. "To play that physical a game with only five available players and still lead for three and a half quarters says a lot about this group's toughness. When we match intensity and bring that edge every night, we can compete with anybody."
Cape Fear now heads back home for a rematch with the Hurricane's Wednesday evening. Game time is set for 5:00 pm in the Schwartz Center.
