Sea Devils Advance in South District Tournament with 2–1 OT Win Over Pensacola State
Cape Fear Community College women's soccer fought back from an early deficit to defeat Pensacola State 2–1 in overtime during the South District Tournament, advancing to face Southern Union State (AL) tomorrow at 2:00 PM EST.
The Sea Devils started strong, controlling possession and creating multiple chances in the opening minutes. However, Pensacola struck first in the 8th minute when Vivian Kettenhausen found the back of the net off a Teresa Hernandez assist, giving the Pirates a 1–0 lead. Despite the deficit, Cape Fear stayed composed, patiently working its way back into the game.
In the 80th minute, the Sea Devils finally drew level when Laina Elliott converted a pass from Nataly Diluccia, tying the score at 1–1 and forcing overtime. Both teams had opportunities in the extra period, but in the 94th minute, sophomore captain Kayla Donley scored off a corner from freshman Amelia Myers, delivering the golden goal and the win. Goalkeeper Jaime Maguire made 16 saves, keeping Cape Fear in the match and preserving the victory.
Coach Ponton's reflected on the performance: "I'm very proud of the team today. Every player contributed and quickly adapted to adjustments throughout the match. This was a whole team effort, and they earned this win."
With the victory, the Sea Devils continue their South District Tournament run and will face Southern Union State (AL) tomorrow at 2:00 PM EST.
